The Lady Cardinals Volleyball team had an impressive showing Friday during pool play of the 3A State Tournament in Emporia. The team reeled off wins in two games each against Hoisington, Jayhawk Linn, and Nemaha Valley. Saturday morning’s semifinal match at 10:00 will be against the second place team from Pool B, Marysville.
In the first match against Hoisington, Cheney got off to a quick start in game one and didn’t look back. They won the first game, 25-17, and the second, 25-12.
Next up were the Jayhawks from Jayhawk Linn. Jayhawk Linn came in with only four losses on the season and the number one seed in the tournament. Midway through the first game the Cardinals were down 15-12, but went on an 8-3 run to take a 20-18 lead and win the game 25-22. In game two, the Cards jumped out 13-5, enroute to a 25-13 win.
After getting a one game break, Cheney finished pool play with the Nemaha Valley Raiders. The Raiders were a scrappy bunch, but the Cardinals beat them 25-18 and 25-11.
The tournament resumes Saturday morning at 10:00 with semifinal matches. Silver Lake will play Hoisington and Cheney will face Marysville.
