On Senior day, Cheney senior Kauy Kuhn followed fellow senior Dawson Winters 1 hit performance in game 1 with a 2 hit, complete game shutout performance of his own in game 2 to complete the sweep of Kingman with an 8-0 win. Kuhn faced only 4 batters over the minimum and struck out 10 to pick up his 7th win of the season.
The Cheney offense did most of their damage with 2 outs. The Cardinals had 3, two out hits in the 3rd inning to plate 3 runs and push the score to 4-0. Then in the 4th with two outs and the bases loaded, freshman Trenton Reitmayer hit a double in the gap to clear the bases and put the game seemingly out of reach at 7-0. Cheney would go on to add 1 run in the 6th after a Winter double off the top of the left field fence, a wild pitch, and a Klinkerman groundout. That would be more than enough for Kuhn as he finished off the 7th to pickup the complete game shutout.
The wins clinched the 1 seed in the regional for the Cardinals who finished the season at 16-4. The Cheney Baseball program, in it’s fourth year, has now had at least 16 wins each year. Cheney will play in the regional at Collegiate high school beginning on Monday, May 13th. Cheney may host game 1 of the regional pending final regional standings.
